Reducing your carbon footprint

Despite everyone’s best intentions, it’s hard to be constantly environmentally friendly. Although there are always options which might result in less damage being caused to our atmosphere, these tend to be the more expensive, thereby putting a good many people off. It’s true to say that schemes like Dual Fuel, which uses a combination of gas and electrical energy in the running of a home, are far more conscientious in terms of environmental danger, but they cost a fair bit more.

Many of the UK’s energy companies offer ways for customers to reduce their carbon footprint by improving the efficiency and eco-friendly nature of their energy supplies.  For example, British Gas* offer the Zero Carbon scheme, which comes with the assurance that all the electricity used by the customer will be matched with renewable energy resources, such as turbine or water power, and that 100% of carbon emissions from gas consumption will be offset. In addition they are targeting future areas of green energy research, investing a percentage of the Zero Carbon bill revenue into renewable energy generation and school awareness programmes.

If you’d rather not change from the system you currently use British Gas offer various ways by which you can improve the efficiency of your gas and electricity system. A feature called PowerCleanse offers customers an intensive cleaning of their property’s pipes, as all the gunk which piles up there over the years can result in greatly reduced efficiency, putting strain on your heating appliances and forcing you to pump more gas through to get the adequate effect. Up-to-date insulation is also an easy way of ensuring that you’re getting the most out of your gas and electricity supply, and you could save around £350 per year by insulating your wall cavity and loft with British Gas.

Perhaps the simplest way of regulating your expenditure with British Gas is by signing up to the Pay As You Go system, allowing you to control the financial and environmental implications of your electricity and gas supply in a more hands-on fashion. It costs no more than a monthly billing system, and you’d experience much greater freedom with your finances, as you’ll know exactly how much you’re spending in the running of your household on a day to day basis. Furthermore, those irritating paper bills, the result of hacked-down rainforests, won’t be coming through your letterbox any more.
