background |  changing culture not climate

Our Carbon Balancing is positive and practical and delivers real world benefits. However to gain the kind of CO2 reductions that we need globally we must place major value change at the core of our mission. This is essential for an ethical business operating in the carbon management sector. We accept we have ten years to make fast changes and stabilise CO2 emissions. 'Business as usual' is no longer an option. Our 'double speak' culture shows rapidly rising awareness of global warming on the one hand and a proliferation of high carbon lifestyles on the other. We have reached the point where we know all too clearly what is going on and our part in it. Now is the time to choose to do something. To identify and actively encourage 'low carbon' products and lifestyles and to look carefully at some of the others:

  • a tonne of strawberries grown and eaten locally in season results in just 17kg of CO2. Out of season from Israel and the footprint is over 200 times larger, close to 4 tonnes of C02.
  • 600,000 people in the UK have bought bottle gas fired patio heaters and DIY chains report 25% year on year increases in sales. Using a patio heater one evening for 2 hours has the same carbon footprint as the average daily use of a car.
  • SUV's are sold on the basis of empowering someone to go anywhere and deal with tough conditions and yet they are mainly used for a to b travel like any car. These high emission vehicles are making a significant contribution to global warming, making up 7% of the UK car market, and rising.
  • One return flight (per passenger) from London to Sydney releases more CO2 than both an average UK car and an average UK home in a whole year!
The culture change needed now is as much a challenge for businesses as it is for individual consumers. With ten years to transform, a 'responsible' business can no longer develop and market high carbon products and lifestyles. Let's deal with doublespeak. If we cut the confusion we will cut the carbon.
