ARE YOU COMPLYING?
From April 2010 over 5,000 UK businesses will need to comply with the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) - a complex piece of new UK legislation.
It is a mandatory scheme which will apply to any business using more than 6,000 MWh of electricity through half hourly metering (in practice this probably means an annual spend of around £500,000). It means that for the first time, a lot of larger organisations will have to work out their carbon footprint and report on it. They will then also have to buy enough allowances through the scheme to compensate for their emissions. A percentage of the cost of the allowances can be recouped but that will depend on relative performance and being placed high in the CRC emissions reductions league table.
Performance is based on reductions in the footprint, and the incentives are built in. By year 5 of the scheme, the top performers will get back their allowance expenditure back with a 50% bonus. But those organisations at the bottom of the CRC league table will only get half their money back.
CLEVEL is now working with larger organisations to help them meet the CRC commitment. Our service includes:
- advising on CRC impact and time frames
- setting up your carbon footprint framework and calculating the carbon footprint
- helping improve performance, identify reduction opportunities and gain higher league table ranking
