We all have a Carbon Footprint that can be reduced and compensated for (offset). Virtually everything thing we do is based on the use of oil, gas and coal, and creates carbon dioxide emissions. In estimating footprints we look at CO2 levels from the use of fossil fuels in impacts like energy and transport. These are things we can take direct responsibility for. CLEVEL has developed a framework to assess your carbon footprint which enables you to choose if you wish to look at the regulatory minimum or go further to extend the scope and coverage of your footprint. Our approach follows the globally recognised standard, the World Resources Institute's Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol (Scopes 1,2 and 3). This is the approach recommended by organisations like the Carbon Disclosure Project. We deliver the footprint in an easy format for understanding and decision making.
Carbon levels in the atmosphere are directly related to lifestyles and consumption. When these are expressed in terms of a carbon footprint we see big differences between individuals, organisations and countries. These differences can be enormous - orders of magnitude in scale. For example, in the US, annual per capita CO2 emissions are around 20 tonnes. This is about 2 times that of the UK 's 10 tonnes, and over 200 times the footprint of a person living in a country like Uganda, East Africa. The differences can also be significant between people in the same place. We can all play a part in changing from a high to a low carbon culture.
